- Unveiling the World of Online Horse Shows: Everything You Need to Know
An online horse show, also known as a virtual horse show, is a competition where participants submit photographs of themselves and their horses performing various disciplines and tasks according to the show's requirements, instead of attending a physical event. These submissions are then judged by knowledgeable judges, and results are posted online. This format allows equestrians from all over the world to compete without the need for travel, making it accessible and convenient, especially for those in remote locations or those with limited access to traditional shows. Online horse shows can cover a wide range of equestrian disciplines, including dressage, show jumping, cross country, and many more. They may also include classes for conformation, where the horse is judged on its physical appearance and adherence to breed standards, as well as fun classes like fancy dress or liberty. Participants typically pay an entry fee, upload their photos to a specified platform by a deadline, and await the judges' decisions. Although Online Horse Showing was established in late 2016, the format has grown in popularity, especially during times when gatherings and events were restricted due to health and safety concerns. It offers a way to keep the equestrian community engaged, provides training goals, and allows for a competition experience without the usual costs and logistics involved in attending live events. These virtual equestrian showing competitions offer diverse features and advantages tailored to equestrians of all levels, from amateurs to professionals. They reflect an innovative approach to equestrian sport, leveraging technology to maintain competitiveness and community engagement. Here are key aspects that provide a deeper understanding of horse shows online: Format and Participation Submission Process: Participants must review the schedule and choose photographs that align with the criteria outlined on the entry form, or capture new images accordingly. Classes Offered: A wide variety of classes are available, mirroring those found in traditional horse shows. This can range from flat classes (e.g., dressage movements, traditional showing) to jumping classes, cross country, and even non-riding classes such as best handler, where the handler is judged on their ability to present the horse on the ground. Judging Criteria: Just like in-person shows, each class has a set of criteria. Judges, who are knowledgeable within the equestrian industry, review entries remotely. They evaluate performances based on how well the image meets criteria, adherence to the discipline's standards, rider's skill and presentation, and overall harmony between horse and rider. Advantages Accessibility: Eliminates geographical barriers, allowing participants from different regions or countries to compete against each other without the need for travel. Cost-Effective: Significantly reduces costs associated with traditional horse shows, such as transportation, lodging, entry fees, and stabling. Flexibility: Participants can photograph their images at a time that suits them within the submission window, allowing for better management of schedules and accommodating unforeseen circumstances like bad weather. Learning and Feedback: Some online shows provide detailed feedback from judges, which can be invaluable for educational purposes and for improving future entries. Community and Engagement Global Community: Builds a sense of community among equestrians worldwide, creating connections and friendships that otherwise may not be possible. Inclusivity: Encourages participation from a broader range of riders, including those who may feel intimidated by the traditional show environment or have horses not suited for certain in-person competitions. Social Media Integration: Many online horse shows leverage social media platforms for submission, judging, and announcing results, enhancing the visibility of participants and creating opportunities for sponsors and advertisers. How to Participate in Online Horse Shows: Locate the entry page on the website. The entry page for Online Horse Showing can be accessed here . Review the class schedule and carefully read the criteria. Choose the classes you want to enter and select suitable images. Upload your photos and provide the handler and horse's names. Add the entry to your cart. For multiple entries, return to the schedule and repeat the process. Proceed to checkout and enter your postal and payment details. Once the entry is submitted, wait for the results. The results page for Online Horse Showing can be found here .

- Top Tips for Online Horse Shows
Want to Improve Your Online Horse Showing Results? Here are our top tips for online horse showing, covering everything from choosing the right class to turnout, photo selection, and how judging works. Whether you're a beginner or aiming for more rosettes, these tips will help you stand out and succeed. How to Enter Entries can be submitted through the Enter Here page using our online form. 1. How do I choose the right class in online horse showing? To choose the correct class, make sure to read the full class description before entering. You’ll find the judging criteria listed when you click into a class and scroll down. Matching your image to the class theme gives you the best chance of winning a rosette. Still unsure? Feel free to email us or send a private message on social media for guidance. 2. What should I know about class criteria and image selection? Always read the class criteria carefully. This ensures you submit an image that matches what the class is judged on. Some classes, like those involving paces or movement, benefit from multiple angles — if allowed, take advantage of collages to help judges fairly assess your entry. 3. What does 'turnout' mean in virtual horse shows? In online showing, “turnout” refers to your and your horse’s presentation, not being turned out in a field. Make sure both horse and rider are appropriately dressed and groomed. Tack should be clean, and horses should be plaited, trimmed, or shown naturally as suitable. For condition classes, include a side-on photo (preferably without a saddle) to help judges assess your horse’s form and coat. 4. What kind of photo is best for jumping classes? Use a side-on or shoulder view shot where the horse and rider are clearly visible over a jump. This angle lets the judge evaluate shape, form, and technique, which can make the difference between placing or not. 5. Should my horse look alert in the photo? Yes. A horse that looks alert, with ears forward and engaged in its environment, may be placed higher depending on the class. Avoid submitting photos where your horse looks disinterested or disengaged — unless a class specifically states otherwise. 6. Can I submit blurred or low-quality images? No. Blurry or pixelated photos make it harder for the judge to score fairly. Always choose clear, sharp images where your horse is the focal point and easy to assess. 7. Do I need to rotate my image before submitting it? Yes. All images must be upright and correctly oriented. If your photo is sideways or upside down, the judge may have trouble scoring it, which could affect your final placing. 8. Are watermarked images allowed in online horse shows? Only if you have the photographer’s permission. Watermarks that cover your horse will require proof of purchase or written permission. Small logo-style watermarks for branding are fine, but the horse must remain clearly visible. 9. Can I use collages in online classes? Yes — if the class allows it. Collages are a great way to show multiple angles or moments, but avoid overcrowding. Every image in the collage should be clearly visible to help the judge score accurately. 10. Can I enter with old photos or photos of a deceased horse? Yes. Older images or entries of deceased horses are accepted as long as you own the photo rights. For age-restricted classes, ensure the horse and rider met the class criteria when the photo was taken. 11. What are the rules for special monthly classes like 'Horse of the Month'? Photo of the Month : Must be taken during the current show month. Horse of the Month : Collages are encouraged to show what you’ve done recently. Condition/Coat Classes : Submit full-body images, not headshots. Turnout Classes : Riders and horses should be in appropriate show attire. Include notes if the attire is nontraditional. Headshot Classes : Use close-up images, usually shoulders-up. Mobile Phone Classes : Entries must be taken with a phone. Collage Classes : Use multiple clear images as requested, but avoid clutter. A collage that shows off the horse's condition first and foremost as well as personality and movement was prioritized as per the class description, as that made it much easier to get an idea of what your horse was like overall. A few submissions were lovely looking horses, but only a single image or the same pose which made it hard to see other aspects - they are amazing, don't be afraid to show them off!" 1. Naomi Silk & Chloe - "This image was exactly what I was looking for in this class - a nicely groomed horse that is well put together, and a variety of images showcasing her personality and talents. Well done!" 2. Thanks to all of your support through both entry fees and extra contributions in Online Horse & Pet Showing, I have exceeded my fundraising target! After covering some of the running costs, a fantastic £218 was raised, with an additional £48 in extra donations. I have ensured that the full £48 has gone directly to the donation pool, and to make it a nice round number, I have personally topped it up to £270! For anyone who would personally like to follow my journey of overcoming 18 months of injury and raising money in memory of my Grandma for The British Heart Foundation then please follow the link: https://ajbellgreatnorthrun2025.enthuse.com/.../jasmine... Judging this class was incredibly difficult. I genuinely wished I could have placed you all because every entry was filled with so much love and effort, it was truly heartwarming to see. If you didn’t place this time, please know that it’s not a reflection of your entry not being good enough; it simply came down to limited rosettes. Regardless of the results, you all have the most fantastic horses, and you should be so proud! View full class list Class 5 — Jumping Stars Judge's comments: "This was probably the highest standard of class I've ever judged for OHS, with lots of these entries deserving real credit. I am certain that several of these will be winning photos on another day, so do put them in again. The highest placed had the most consistency, with correct technique and obvious ease. Be careful that if you use collages, that all the photos are of the same standard. Several people dropped places because one or two photos weren't as strong, whereas if the weaker ones had been left out, they'd have got the higher rosettes. Be wary of over-folding - remember the horse won't jump higher if you fold more dramatically! Special mention to Keeley Campling who came 7th, and demonstrates really well why having a secure seat with a sensible 'just enough' fold is important on a bouncy horse! (Well done Keeley!) Also watch the lower legs swinging back and toppling over the horse's shoulders; shortening the stirrups a couple of holes and keeping your lower leg more secure will help the horse get his shoulders up and make a cleaner jump. A very well done all. " 1. Vanessa Baker & Rocker 2. Muireann O’Donnell & Magic & Misty 3. Seren Rowe & Patrick 4. Laila de Bondt & Benji 5. Kirsty Angus & Tiggy 6.
